I suppose we are really asking deep questions about the nature of Christmas and what it is all about. What is right at the centre of Christmas? Is it really about the parties and the food? Is it truly centred on family and friends? Is it in fact only a time for children?
What will Christmas be like this year? This is the second year in a row that we have found ourselves asking this question in the light of COVID 19. Way back in March 2020 we would never have believed we would still be in its icy grip at Christmas 2021. Yet here we are asking will we be able to meet with family and friends, will we be able to get all the shopping we need, will we be able to travel to visit loved ones?
Of course we know the answer. All of those things are good and bring us joy but the true meaning is Jesus Christ. He is the reason for the season and Covid cannot alter that. Gal. 4:4 – 5 “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
God loved us so much that He sent His own Son to this earth to become one of us in order to buy us back from Satan’s power. That is something we can celebrate no matter what Covid does to our traditional Christmas. In fact perhaps we have even more reason to celebrate the true meaning of the season because of Covid. This virus has pressed the stop button on what we knew as normal life. It has caused us to adjust how we live and to re-evaluate our lifestyles and priorities. God has been speaking loudly over the last 2 years. The question is have I been listening? Have I fixed my eyes upon Jesus and seen Him as the true meaning in my life? Is my chief end truly to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever?
May each of you have a truly Happy Christmas this year because it is one focused upon Christ and His mighty love for you.
Yours in Christ,
Brian Boyd
